VANCOUVER, Canada - While many of the technical minds of the concrete industry converged in Vancouver for the ACI Spring Convention, two special NRMCA guests took the opportunity to slip away for a visit to Knelson's headquarters to view the new Knelson Concrete Systems technology.

Colin Lobo, NRMCA VP, Engineering, and Richard Gaynor, (previously Executive Vice President at NRMCA and NAA) took a day-and-a half long tour through Knelson's manufacturing plant and two CRS installations with Dave Beckham, Concrete Recovery System (CRS) Product Founder & Manager.

One of the CRS installation tours included the Corliss Concrete, Sumner, WA installation, which secured Knelson an Honorable Mention for this year's NRMCA Environmental Innovation Award.

When asked about his observations of CRS, Colin Lobo states, "Knelson provides an opportunity for a concrete producer to progress beyond environmental compliance.....a solution for attaining zero-discharge while possibly establishing a positive mindset for the concept of recycling."

Both Lobo and Gaynor are active and influential participants in the concrete industry. Lobo is a research leader in the effects of various types of process water on production mixes. His recent article (co-written with Gary Mullings) in NRMCA's Concrete in Focus publication, Recycled Water in Ready Mixed Concrete (downloadable file - pdf file, 899 kbs | 7 pages) features the results of several years of lab testing and features a flow diagram of the Knelson process.

Dick Gaynor, although retired from active service with NRMCA, continues to contribute intellectually and practically to the concrete industry as one of its foremost-experienced members.

Lobo and Gaynor are members, along with Beckham, of ASTM sub-committee C09.40, which regulates materials used in mixing fresh concrete.

Knelson anticipates contributing data to both ASTM and the industry at large supporting the positive effects of recycled slurry water in fresh concrete, and looks forward to helping the industry move forward in the practice of material recovery and reuse.

Knelson Concrete Systems (KCS), a division of Knelson, provides the ready-mix concrete industry with "Continuous Process" solutions for concrete waste management. KCS's mainstay technology, the Concrete Recovery System (CRS) provides a comprehensive solution for the ready-mix concrete producer by allowing producers to move away from waste management, and into material recovery by converting waste products into value-added material to be consumed back into fresh ready-mix.
