Walt Miles, president of Miles Sand & Gravel, along side with Dave Beckham, product founder of Knelsons' Concrete Recovery System, overlook the installation of Miles Sand & Gravel's new Knelson Concrete Recovery System. | TACOMA, Washington - The Canyon Road site of Miles Sand & Gravel in Tacoma, WA, welcomed their Knelson Concrete Recovery System onto their site earlier last month. The brand new Pacific Northwest facility, scheduled to be operational within the next few months, is the first Miles plant to employ CRS.
It took 3 hours from the time the delivery truck arrived onsite to the time the truck contents were in position, and less than one hour for the crane to deposit the skid on the platform and position the secondary tank extension.
Similar to his friendly competitor Scott Corliss, whose Kent, WA, plant features a CRS, owner Walt Miles caught the vision of CRS in its conceptual form and has continued to be a supporter throughout the R&D process. Corliss and Miles diverged when it came to site layout design, specifically the truck washout component. While Corliss trucks back up a ramp and rinse into the tank located in the above-ground enclosure underneath, Miles opted for a drive-over grate with the CRS tanks located below in a 23-foot deep enclosure, a design better suited to the site's logistical requirements.
Miles is incorporating the Knelson system to ensure 100% zero discharge while maximizing on-site trucking efficiency. The drive-over grate enables the truck driver to remain in the vehicle throughout the washout & truck rinsing process.
The Miles unit is a ZD-1530, designed to accommodate fleets with 15-30 trucks, and has a total storage capacity of approximately 24,000 US gallons. The Miles team hopes to have the plant operational before Fall of this year.
Knelson Concrete Systems (KCS), a division of Knelson, provides the ready-mix concrete industry with "Continuous Process" solutions for concrete waste management. KCS's mainstay technology, the Concrete Recovery System (CRS) provides a comprehensive solution for the ready-mix concrete producer by allowing producers to move away from waste management, and into material recovery by converting waste products into value-added material to be consumed back into fresh ready-mix.
